4.3 Signal Transduction Pathways

In short

You must understand that signal transduction may result in changes in gene expressions and cell function, which may alter phenotype or result in programmed cell death (apoptosis).

What else do you need to know about Signal Transduction Pathways?

You should know that changes in signal transduction pathways can alter cellular responses, and that mutations in any domain of the receptor protein or in any component of the signaling pathway may affect the downstream components by altering the subsequent transduction of the signal. Furthermore, you should understand that chemicals that interact with any component of the signaling pathway may activate or inhibit the pathway. Illustrative examples that can be used to demonstrate these concepts include the use of chemical messengers by microbes for quorum sensing, epinephrine stimulation of glycogen breakdown in mammals, cytokines regulating gene expression for cell replication, mating pheromones in yeast, ethylene levels causing fruit ripening, and HOX genes regulating animal body plans during embryonic development.

How is Signal Transduction Pathways tested on the exam?

For the AP Exam, you must have a deep understanding of the significance of the steps in cell signaling, the amplification of the signal, the recycling of relay molecules between activated and inactivated forms to regulate the cellular response, and the multiple roles of the same molecules in providing specificity. Using the principles of cell signaling, you should be able to explain—using claim, evidence, and reasoning—how a drug works or how the symptoms of a chronic disease arise. You should understand that signal molecules bind to receptors and that gene expression can be stimulated by signal transduction. The suggested skill for this topic is Argumentation (6.C), requiring you to provide reasoning to justify a claim by connecting evidence to biological theories.
