AP Chemistry · Unit 8: Acids and Bases
8.11 pH and Solubility
In short
You must understand that the solubility of a salt is pH sensitive when one of its constituent ions is a weak acid, a weak base, or the hydroxide ion. These effects must be understood qualitatively using Le Châtelier's principle. The specification explicitly excludes computations of solubility as a function of pH; you are only required to predict and explain the qualitative shifts in solubility.

How is pH and Solubility tested on the exam?
Assessment will focus on qualitative reasoning rather than quantitative calculations. You may be asked to identify how the addition of an acid or base affects the solubility of a specific salt, applying Le Châtelier's principle to justify your answers. Questions may also require you to make observations or collect data from representations of laboratory setups or results (Skill 2.D). Computations of solubility as a function of pH will not be assessed on the AP Exam.
