AP Chemistry · Unit 4: Chemical Reactions
4.7 Types of Chemical Reactions
In short
You must be able to classify chemical reactions into three main types: acid-base, oxidation-reduction (redox), and precipitation. For acid-base reactions, the focus is on the transfer of one or more protons (H+ ions) between species. For redox reactions, you must understand the transfer of electrons and use oxidation numbers to identify which species are oxidized and reduced.

What else do you need to know about Types of Chemical Reactions?
Combustion must be recognized as a subclass of redox reactions involving oxygen gas, specifically noting that complete combustion of hydrocarbons produces carbon dioxide and water. For precipitation reactions, you must understand the mixing of aqueous ions to form an insoluble or sparingly soluble compound. The scope of solubility rules is strictly limited: you must know that all sodium, potassium, ammonium, and nitrate salts are soluble in water. The AP Exam explicitly excludes the assessment of the terms 'reducing agent' and 'oxidizing agent'. Furthermore, rote memorization of any 'solubility rules' other than the four specified is explicitly excluded.
How is Types of Chemical Reactions tested on the exam?
You are expected to describe components of and quantitative information from models and representations that illustrate both particulate-level and macroscopic-level properties (Science Practice 1.B). A common pitfall on the AP Exam is that many students struggle with questions that require them to justify their identification of a particular type of reaction using an equation. Questions may present a reaction (or a particulate representation) and ask you to identify the reaction type and justify your claim with evidence, such as changes in oxidation states or the formation of a precipitate.
